Sales tax compliance is riddled with risk. Failure to comply with the applicable sales tax rules can have a devastating effect on a business, but they’re often overlooked because they’re considered “pass-through” as the business is responsible for collecting the applicable taxes which pass through the business and are subsequently turned over or paid to the states. While these pass-through taxes are not meant to create a financial burden on a business, failure to comply can create significant risk, and managing the obligations can be a burden to the team who has to manage them.

Beaufort County's New 1% Tax Will Soon Be Put to Work on New Projects

Approximately 58% of the 65,000 voting-aged residents of Beaufort County, South Carolina have approved a 1% sales tax rate hike within the county, which will go far in helping raise some much-needed funds to help the county take on new projects.  The first projects will be getting underway soon now that the funding is in place.

Lee County, Florida Approves 1/2 Cent Sales Tax For Schools

The residents of Lee County are investing in their children and in their futures as they voted to approve a 1/2 cent sales tax increase.  These funds will go directly to schools to help pay for their ever-rising costs of educating the county's 84,000 students.

Topeka, Kansas Half Cent Sales Tax Extends For Another Decade

Topeka residents have voted to extend the city's 1/2% sales tax for another 10 years.  Residents cite the main reason for allowing the 1/2% sales tax to continue is in hopes of wrapping up ongoing road work in the coming years.

Forsyth County Voters Reject Quarter Percent Sales Tax Increase

Forsyth County, GA voters have overwhelmingly rejected the proposed sales tax increase that would raise sales taxes 1/4% with 68% of voters saying they are against the increase in tax.  The new sales tax was supposed to help pay for much needed new county courthouse facilities and the leftover money was going to be used to help improve the school system within the county.

Redwood City Seeks an Additional Sales Tax Increase

Redwood City, California will be asking voters for permission to increase the city's sales tax rate by another half of a cent today as residents hit the ballot boxes for Election Day.  The proposition will allow the city to raise their already rather-high sales taxes from 8.75% to 9.25%.

Sales Tax From Restaurants Generate Huge Revenue for Waco

Nine new restaurants have opened their doors in Waco, Texas over the past year.  There are now 119 full-service eateries in the city.  That number is up from 110 in October of last year and 103 from October of 2013.

North Carolina Now Collecting Sales Tax Online

Effective November 1, remote sellers including many online businesses are required to collect sales tax from their customers.  This means that shopping online is going to cost the average consumer a bit more money now than it did in the past.  This comes after the US Supreme Court ruling in June of this year in the case of South Dakota vs. Wayfair.

Colorado Town Eyes Sales Tax Increase for New Recreation Center

Residents of Grand Junction, Colorado, have been asking for a recreation center for years.  The city's leaders say they can have it -- but only if they approve a sales tax.  According to an article from KJCT8, the Grand Junction City Council recently voted to place the sales tax proposal on their next municipal ballot, next April.
