Supreme Court Ruling On Internet Sales Tax Could Become Major Headache For Smaller E-Commerce Websites

The recent ruling by the United States Supreme Court that will now require online retailers to collect sales tax on all applicable transactions is expected to cause more than just a few headaches for many smaller e-commerce websites.  The decision by the court reverses a longstanding policy of not requiring companies to collect sales tax on sales to customers residing in a state in which the company maintains no physical presence.

Sacramento Sales Tax Seeks to Improve Impoverished Areas

The Sacramento Bee reported on June 7 that Sacramento is trying to pass a half-cent sales tax to improve the impoverished areas.  This increase would be in addition to the proposal to permanently extend the Measure U half-cent sales tax.

Sales Tax Increase to Benefit Transportation in Broward County

The citizens of Broward County, Florida may find themselves paying more in sales tax after November 6.  A 1% sales tax increase has been proposed which would mean they would be paying 7% instead of 6% on their purchases.  According to the SunSentinel, the increase in taxes will initially raise $357 million dollars a year to improve transportation.

Hoover Alabama Sales Tax Increase

The city of Hoover, Alabama may see its first sales tax increase in almost a quarter century.  Mayor Frank Brocato recently proposed that the city raise its sales and lodging tax in order to help reconcile a budget crisis.  If the motion is approved, the estimated additional revenue will generate approximately $20 million for the city of Hoover.

Navajo Nation Sales Tax Increase

The Navajo Nation—mostly found in northeastern Arizona, stretching just into southern Utah and western New Mexico—is set to increase its sales tax from 5% to 6% starting July 1st, 2018.  This is the first general sales tax rate change for the Navajo Nation in five years, and is being enacted to increase funding for their Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

New Jersey Governor Reinstates Program That Lowers Sales Tax

New Jersey State Governor Phil Murphy recently signed into law a bill that renews sales tax cuts for five towns in the state.  The measure taken by Governor Murphy effectively reverses a decision made last year by former Governor Chris Christie to nix a program that brought sales tax relief to these five jurisdictions.

Sales Tax Increase in Hamilton County Ohio

Hamilton County, Ohio, home to the Cincinnati metropolitan area, is considering raising sales tax.  The county commissioners would like to raise the tax by 0.25 cents in order to raise $38 million, which they say is desperately needed.  The county commissioners are currently deciding on whether to raise the tax or not, and if so, whether to do it by direct vote or leave it up to the people at the polls.  A recent editorial in Cincinnati.com discusses the details:

New Sales Tax in Oklahoma City

As of January 1st, 2018, Oklahoma City instituted a new permanent sales tax hike of 1/4 cent.  According to the city's website, this means that a shopper pays an extra 25 cents in tax on a $100 purchase.  This is not a substantial hike but what makes it significant is that this is the first sales tax hike the city has instituted since 1976 and it is expected to raise the annual revenue by $26 million.

West Virginia Local Sales Tax Changes

Although the state sales tax in West Virginia is a relatively high six percent, this is generally balanced out by a lack of local sales taxes.  At the moment, out of two hundred and thirty municipalities, fewer than twenty percent impose an additional sales tax.  For a small number of residents, that rate is set to rise on July 1st, 2018, when the towns of Athens, Davis, Elizabeth, and Elkins all begin a one percent local sales tax (for a combined rate of seven percent).

TrumpStore.com to Collect Sales Tax in New York and Virginia

An online store operated by the Trump Organization has initiated the process to collect sales tax on orders from customers that live in the states of Virginia and New York.  This brings the number of states in which TrumpStore.com collects sales tax to four as the tax was already collected for orders purchased by Florida and Louisiana residents.  The online merchant sells a variety of items stamped with the Trump brand including baseball caps and polo shirts.
