Put Up Your Dukes - South Carolina vs. Online Shopping

By Brian Greer on Fri, Nov 17, 2017 @ 08:39 AM

I'm predicting this week's breaking news of the State of South Carolina officially filing suit against global Internet giant Amazon for a reported amount of $500 million will precede major increases in online sales during the onset of the 2017 holiday buying frenzy.  Online merchants can expect to see even greater numbers than the usual 15% online sales increase this year, due to many states jumping on the bandwagon to grab their piece of the pie as Americans strive to save hard-earned money by shopping online and thereby saving the expense of paying their state's sales tax.

Communities Raise Sales Taxes to Fund Schools

By Brian Greer on Tue, Oct 24, 2017 @ 03:52 PM

Voters in small communities are deciding whether to increase local sales tax rates to fund local schools.  Many times, schools are funded through property taxes but property taxes are not always enough to meet school budgets.  In these communities, a special local option sales tax can help close the gap.  The key is getting local residents to agree to the sales tax increase.

Des Moines Considering a Sales Tax Increase

Des Moines has approved $62,000 for a phone survey to explore the idea of adding a one cent sales tax in Polk County.  The county is one of few in Iowa without such a tax.  A lobbying firm will be paid to survey residents about how they feel about the new tax.
