Tuesday afternoon, the Santa Cruz City Council in California declared a fiscal emergency, and they have prepared to place a revenue-raising sales tax measure on the June ballot for voters to approve.  If the proposed quarter of a percent tax is approved by voters, the tax on goods purchased would total 9.25 percent.  The sales tax is estimated to bring in $3 million in revenue annually, and the money would be placed in the general fund to pay for services such as the fire department, police department, and parks.  The proposed sales tax would help bring Santa Cruz in line with other neighboring cities.
