When it comes to handling sales tax for a business, especially one located outside the US, expert partnerships can really improve how smoothly things run. This case study looks at how TaxConnex worked with Fred Brasch, a seasoned financial professional and fractional CXO, to simplify sales tax processes for his clients.
Fred Brasch, a highly experienced financial and business consultant, brings a unique blend of international and domestic business and financial expertise. Trained as a chartered accountant in South Africa, Fred's career has spanned continents and industries, including work with prominent firms in New York and significant roles in commodity trading, hedge funds, and start-ups. Upon moving to Atlanta in 1996, Fred adapted to the U.S. financial environment and eventually became a fractional CXO, focusing on business and financial cleanups.
One area of business management that Fred himself will admit he doesn’t manage, or wants to get involved with, is sales tax. He was introduced to TaxConnex when a previous international company he was working with faced complications understanding what their sales tax obligations were and how they were to manage it. The more he investigated their challenges, the more complexities they faced. Fred's growing need for specialized sales tax support led him to seek out a reliable outsourcing partner. After conducting thorough research and evaluating several companies. TaxConnex stood out due to its deep expertise and long-standing presence in the sales tax field.
Excellence. Responsiveness. History.
“When I researched TaxConnex, I just thought, these guys live this sales tax life, it’s not something they just decided to do one day, they have deep roots in the sales tax world,” exclaimed Brasch, “And the fact that they actually answer the phone when you call really stood out.”
Even though Brasch was very impressed with TaxConnex for this first company, they went against his advice and went with another firm. But he didn’t forget about TaxConnex.
In mid-2022 Brasch started working with another foreign retail company with existing US operations whose sales across the US were booming. Their current team was comfortable with managing indirect tax obligations outside the US, but when it came to their expansion into the US, Brasch knew they needed someone with US sales tax expertise.
The retailer was already using an automated software to attempt to manage their growing US obligations, but when it came to managing their registrations and sales and use tax filings, it just wasn’t hitting the mark.
“The vendor’s automated system was really just mucking things up,” explained Brasch, I advised the company to outsource this work completely i.e. State registrations, monthly and/or quarterly filings with associated payments. “I had already done my research in this area and told them the vendor we need to talk to is TaxConnex.’”
TaxConnex jumped right in and collaborated with Brasch and his client’s internal team to develop a streamlined process for managing sales tax reporting, filings and funding. Once the process was clean and defined, the client was partnered with one of TaxConnex’s dedicated practitioners who works as part of their accounting team, answering questions, giving advice and ensuring they remain in compliance with all their registrations and monthly filings.
Now, TaxConnex handles all their sales and use tax processes.
For Brasch and his client the partnership that developed between the retailer and TaxConnex continues to be beneficial. And Brasch continues to recommend TaxConnex when it comes to businesses with multi-state sales and use tax issues.
“I’m a loyal person, I like to maintain relationships,” he explained. “When you are in clean-up mode, you need action and people that respond to your needs. You need good people who do things once, do it right, and it is done; that’s TaxConnex.”
For Fred Brasch, the collaboration with TaxConnex has proven invaluable. The partnership has allowed him to focus on his core strengths in financial and business cleanups while relying on TaxConnex for expert sales tax management. This division of labor not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures that sales tax compliance is handled with the utmost precision, something that is especially difficult for businesses based outside of the US without previous US sales and use tax knowledge and experience.
Brasch's loyalty to TaxConnex is a testament to their exceptional service and Brasch’s intentions of doing what is best for his clients. He emphasizes the importance of reliable, responsive partners in his business model and has found TaxConnex to be a key component in delivering high-quality financial solutions to his clients.
Through their collaboration, Brasch and TaxConnex have demonstrated how strategic partnerships can drive success in financial management and compliance, ultimately benefiting clients across various industries.
