Williamson County, TN

Residents of Williamson County, Tennessee, will get the opportunity to vote on a potential sales tax increase early next year.  The county commission agreed unanimously on Monday to hold a referendum on the tax hike, placing the fate of the proposed increase in the hands of county voters.  The measure in question would tack an additional half a percent on to the suburban Nashville county's sales tax, raising it from 2.25% to 2.75%; and if successful, would bring in an estimated $60 million in additional sales tax collections over three years.  This money would go towards helping pay down school construction debt, county officials say.  Though no official date has been set, the referendum could take place as early as next January.

Spartanburg County, SC

After gaining county voters' approval last week, the Spartanburg, South Carolina County council made official Monday a one cent sales tax increase.  The increase will go into effect on May 1, 2018 and will remain in place until April 30, 2024.  The tax will not apply to the purchase of groceries or prescription medications; nor to "certain maximum items such as automobiles and sales of personal property otherwise exempt from the state sales tax," according to the Spartanburg County official website.  According to official estimates the tax hike will raise nearly $225 million for the county.  These funds will be used to upgrade the county's judicial center; and to replace the current City Hall and County Administration building with a new joint use government facility.  Any leftover funds (up to $7.6 million) will be used for the county's highest priority road and bridge projects.  The council has stated that they plan to pay for the projects as the additional sales tax collections from the tax increase comes in, and that there will be no new property taxes.
