Barrington Voters to Decide on Sales Tax

Officials in Barrington, Illinois will be asking voters in a fall referendum if the village should create a local sales tax for the first time.  Before imposing and collecting the tax dollars, officials must ask the voters first.  If the sales tax is approved, a one percentage point sales tax will be implemented.  It is estimated to bring in an annual revenue of $1 million, which would go towards the construction projects of parking lots, sidewalks, and other public facilities.  The referendum will be on the general election ballot in November.

Prairie Grove Leaders Asking for Much-Needed Sales Tax

City leaders in Prairie Grove, Arkansas are asking for a half-percent sales tax hike to help fund additional emergency responder positions.  The money earned will only go towards the salary of firemen and police officers.  The sales tax increase is estimated to bring in an extra $273,000 in revenue in 2019.  The Prairie Grove Fire Department operates with only one full-time firefighter, and the police department operates for hours with only one full-time police officer on duty.  The new tax would allow for two officers to be on duty at all times and would staff three new firefighters.  Sales tax would raise from 2.25% to 2.75%, which is about a dollar increase for every 200 dollars spent.
