El Segundo to Revisit Sales Tax

Leaders in El Segundo, California are planning to place a local sales tax measure on the April ballot.  They want to tweak the language first before moving forward with the tax.  The three-quarter-cent sales tax is expected to generate an estimated $9 million a year.  Money raised from the sales tax would go towards the budget deficit and soaring pension costs.  The council will consider the sales tax at its next meeting on December 19.

Sales Tax Figures Climb for Trousdale County

One Tennessee county reports that tax collections were up in October from the previous year.  Trousdale County collected $277,565.86 in state sales tax and $90,316.52 in local sales tax.  Overall state revenues were also up for the year.  Tennessee's collections for October topped $1 billion, while the state collected $31.1 million less during October of last year.

School Board Hoping to Add Sales Tax to Madison County, Illinois Ballot

The Highland School Board passed a resolution to place a one-percent sales tax increase on the March primary election ballot.  Only one board member voted against the resolution.  If the issue makes the ballot in March, it will be the third time that voters in Madison County decided on the idea.  The tax was previously rejected in 2011 and 2017.

If the tax is successfully passed, it can legally only be used to build new facilities, buy land, repair existing facilities, technology infrastructures, or purchase durable equipment.  The money would be collected on all sales in the county and then dispersed back to individual school districts based on student population.  The school board representing at least 50 percent of the students in Madison County must adopt the resolution to pass.
