Position Summary

TaxConnex’s first controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting and treasury functions. This is a high-impact role that combines strategic oversight with day-to-day operations. You will need to think broadly to help scale the business and work in the day to day details of a small business.

The successful candidate will be a senior accountant or senior manager ready to step into a controller role and take on additional leadership responsibilities. You will have a strong background in accounting and an ability to manage fiduciary funds, overseeing the remittance of approximately $2 billion annually in tax payments (approximately 15k payments processed per month) on behalf of our clients. If you are driven by deadlines, you will thrive in this business. In addition to the normal accounting cycle, our business has a fast paced monthly routine of payment processing for sales tax returns on behalf of our clients. Attention to detail, accuracy, and trust with money are paramount, as our clients rely on us to ensure their tax payments are made on time and reconciled to the penny each month.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Accounting, Tax and Financial Reporting
  • Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, financial reporting, and month-end/year-end close processes.
  • Produce accurate and timely financial statements, providing insights to leadership on company performance, cash flow, and cost management.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial planning.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting for tax filings for the company.
  1. Treasury Management
  • Reconcile fiduciary accounts daily and ensure tax remittances (approximately $2 billion annually) balance to the penny.
  • Manage positive pay activities with bank.
  • Execute ACH Debit process to withdraw funds from customer’s accounts
  • Execute ACH Credit payments and supervise check processing
  • Convert USD to CAD, AUD, GPB and NZ and manage related checks and wires
  1. Process, Support, and Internal Audit (SOC)
  • Assist with managing and monitoring internal controls and audit activities
  • Develop and implement accounting and Treasury policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Supervise and mentor a small accounting/treasury team, providing guidance and development opportunities.
  • Provide input for process and system improvements
  • Respond to Treasury support requests

 

 

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA required).
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting, with at least 2+ years in a senior accounting or senior management role.
  • Experience with fiduciary accounting or managing large-scale financial transactions is a strong plus.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting software and financial systems; experience with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and a strong work ethic.
  • Trustworthy and responsible with the handling of sensitive financial data and fiduciary funds.
  • Self-starter, strong initiative, Able to manage shifting priorities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills, especially when reconciling large sums of money.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, stringent monthly deadlines, and deliveries in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate financial information clearly.
  • Must operate with a sense of urgency and have a willingness to be available in person to the CEO and officers
