TaxConnex to Present “Sales Tax & Business License Nexus - Unwinding the Complex Rules” at The Tax Technology Association’s 2013 Annual ACT Conference

By Jeff Meigs on Thu, May 02, 2013

ATLANTA, GA – TaxConnex, LLC, America’s leading independent sales and use tax outsourcing and consulting firm, is proud to announce that Robert Dumas, Founder and Managing Partner, will be speaking and presenting at The Tax Technology Association’s 2013 Annual ACT Conference.  Doug Starr, VP of Sales and Marketing at Business Licenses, LLC, will join Robert in discussing sales tax nexus and business license nexus challenge

Nexus for various tax types is a confusing matter, and the rules regarding sales tax nexus and business license nexus have the most overlap and the most confusion.  The presentation, “Sales Tax and Business License Nexus – Unwinding the Complex Rules”, will include thorough discussion of the following topics:

  • How the rules for sales tax nexus and licensing nexus differ from state to state
  • How your method of selling and delivering your service impacts both sales tax and licensing nexus
  • The failure to collect sales tax where required will transfer the financial obligation from the customer to the retailer
  • How gross receipts tax jurisdictions can raise the stakes in determining licensing nexus
  • The risk of not registering or licensing properly and ideas for mitigating that risk

“Nexus has always been a challenging topic for businesses as it’s different for every tax type and license requirement.  Even though there tends to be overlap between sales tax nexus and the requirement for business licenses, there’s still confusion for telecommunications providers,” states Doug Starr, VP of Sales & Marketing, Business Licenses, LLC.

Robert Dumas of TaxConnex adds, “We see an increasing number of businesses struggle with the concept of nexus for transaction tax purposes.  The questions we most often hear include, ‘I only have one physical office and I provide a VoIP service. How could I possibly have nexus in these states?’, ‘Does nexus for telecommunications purposes mean I also have to collect sales tax on the sale of handsets?’  We’ll address those questions during the presentation.”

Attendees will receive 1.5 CPE credits.

The session at the 2013 Annual ACT Conference will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 1:30 PM.  Complete conference details can be found at 2013 Annual ACT Conference

By Jeff Meigs on Tue, Nov 13, 2012

ATLANTA, GA (PRWEB) TaxConnex, America’s leading independent sales and use tax outsourcing and consulting firm, reinforces its position as “Your Outsourced Sales Tax Department.”  This change is reflected in a new marketing campaign including a redesigned website.

In 2008, TaxConnex endeavored to return service to an industry that was being dominated by large, impersonal service providers that lost sight of the customer.

Led by experienced, client focused Practitioners, TaxConnex focuses on providing an outsourced sales tax department with personalized customer service, rather than simply a return preparation service.  Growth of TaxConnex’s sales tax outsourcing service and recent customer satisfaction surveys validate that TaxConnex is on the right path.

“Service to others is one of our core beliefs, and this shows through in our sales tax outsourcing service,” says Brian Greer, TaxConnex Partner and VP Sales & Marketing.  “Our unique ‘Practitioner Model’, where a highly skilled, experienced TaxConnex Practitioner acts as the client’s off-site sales tax manager, continues to deliver exceptional levels of client satisfaction.”

TaxConnex’s ongoing commitment to sales tax outsourcing and superior client service is supported by a website redesign and a new tagline – “TaxConnex – Your Outsourced Sales Tax Department”.

When businesses turn to sales tax outsourcing, they often want to outsource more than just return preparation.  Companies need an experienced professional that can guide them and advise them on sales tax nexus, taxability of their products and services, sales tax audits, and so forth.  For a business with sales tax outsourcing needs, TaxConnex is ‘your outsourced sales tax department’.

“When we founded TaxConnex, we knew that to do sales tax outsourcing right, we had to be more than just a sales tax return preparation factory.  Service had to be paramount,” says TaxConnex Founder and Partner Robert Dumas, CPA.  “That commitment to the client is who we are and it’s also what we do.  Every day, TaxConnex builds capabilities and works diligently to deliver on the promise of being your outsourced sales tax department.”

With TaxConnex’s sales tax outsourcing service, clients can expect:

  • Rapid responses to questions;

  • Open lines of communication;

TaxConnex Celebrates Another Year of 100% Sales Tax Practitioner Retention

By Jeff Meigs on Mon, Nov 28, 2011

TaxConnex, America’s leading independent provider of sales and use tax outsourcing services, celebrates its third consecutive year of 100% sales tax practitioner retention.  Practitioners provide sales and use tax services by preparing and filing returns, addressing sales tax nexus and taxability questions, and delivering continuous support.

“Another year of 100% Sales Tax Practitioner retention is a great milestone for TaxConnex because the sales tax practitioner model is at the heart of how we do business”, states Brian Greer, VP at TaxConnex.  “The Practitioner acts as the client’s off-premise sales tax employee.  There is an investment that clients and Practitioners make in the relationship, so stability clearly benefits the client, but these relationships are also a source of satisfaction for our Practitioners.  Our Practitioners are degreed professionals that take pride in their work.  The Practitioners are the clients’ primary point of contact and the main representative of TaxConnex and we appreciate all that they do.”

“I’ve been with TaxConnex since the beginning”, says Terry Fontaine, a Practitioner at TaxConnex.  “TaxConnex looks at sales tax outsourcing differently.  Instead of just preparing returns, my clients rely on me as their telecom tax resource.  Playing that key role for my clients is gratifying and makes me directly accountable to them for their satisfaction.

TaxConnex Launches Lunch & Learn Program Focused on Sales Tax Nexus

By Jeff Meigs on Tue, Nov 15, 2011

TaxConnex Launches Lunch & Learn Program Focused on Sales Tax Nexus

TaxConnex announces the newest edition to their Lunch & Learn series, “Top Five Issues that Create Sales Tax Nexus”.

“Top Five Issues that Create Sales Tax Nexus” focuses on common nexus creating issues including traveling sales reps, trade shows, Amazon laws, contract labor, and applying income tax nexus rules to sales tax nexus.

“Sales tax is a very specialized field.  Many local and regional public accounting firms do not have the in-house expertise to address today’s complex sales tax issues,” says VP Brian Greer.  We developed the sales tax nexus program because this issue is becoming increasingly complex.  Sales tax nexus affects businesses in all industries but especially small to mid-seized companies.”

TaxConnex's Lunch & Learn program is directed toward CPA’s and public accounting firms that lack an in-house sales tax practice. The Lunch & Learn series provides CPAs and public accounting firms with an overview of relevant sales tax nexus issues, real-life examples, and an opportunity for firm employees to address questions specific to their clients' needs. These events are non-invasive and provide CPAs and their staff with real world, relevant sales tax information.

A recent Lunch & Learn participate summed up the experience, saying “The program provided by TaxConnex was right on target with issues we face on a daily basis.  Our employees left the session with real answers to real questions, not just text book material with limited real world application.”

For additional details or to schedule a Lunch & Learn for your firm, contact Brian Greer.

White Paper Identifies Five Sales Tax Missteps by Technology Firms

By Jeff Meigs on Wed, Sep 28, 2011

TaxConnex, America’s leading independent sales tax outsourcing and consulting firm, today released the latest addition to its series of white papers on sales and use tax issues affecting technology companies.  The latest, entitled “Top Five Activities that Cause Sales Tax Nexus for Technology Companies” was authored by Jeff Meigs, Partner and leader of TaxConnex’s Technology Consulting Practice.

“Sales and use tax is often left unaddressed by technology companies”, says Meigs, “which leads to uncollected sales taxes, interest and penalties.  These hidden liabilities are preventable for the most part and tend to pop up at the most inopportune times such as during the due diligence associated with a merger or acquisition.”

“Much of the confusion stems from a misunderstanding of sales tax nexus creating activities” added Meigs.  "Establishing a presence in a state, even temporarily, may create nexus, giving the technology company the duty to collect and remit sales tax.  Affiliate relationships, sales calls, trade shows and even on-site support visits can create sales tax nexus.  Having sales tax nexus will open up every transaction to potential tax liability, including otherwise non-taxable internet transactions.  A company really needs to know the consequences of its activities in relation to creating sales tax nexus so they can make informed decisions. Otherwise, they may be creating sales tax nexus and generating unfunded tax liabilities that will cause problems later.”

In this white paper, TaxConnex identifies five common issues that technology companies encounter that can inadvertently lead to hidden sales tax liabilities by creating nexus.  If you are uncertain whether your company may have established nexus or if you need assistance planning for potential nexus creating activities, call TaxConnex.
