Little Falls Considers Local Option Sales Tax

The city of Little Falls, Minnesota is considering adding a local option sales tax, but they would first need to decide on a project for the money to go towards.  The state law says that local option sales tax can be used by cities for projects of regional value only.  The sales tax proposal would need to be ready for residents to vote on by the general election held in November.  Officials believe that the sales tax could earn $500,000 annually and possibly go towards a recreation/conference center.

Hurricane Harvey Recovery Boosts Sales Tax Collections

Sales tax collections are up in Texas as the Hurricane Harvey recovery phase continues.  The majority of collections surpassed what was collected during the same time from the past two years.  The city of Victoria has seen a 37-percent increase in sales tax collections over the past year.  Victoria County Judge Ben Zeller said that sales tax receipts from the county also saw an increase of around $200,000 from this same time last year.  Zeller said, "Most businesses in Victoria County reopened very quickly after the storm - within a few weeks, the vast majority of business were reopened."  Businesses opening so quickly have helped the recovery phase bring in higher sales tax collections.

Sales Tax in Pima County, Arizona Could Fund Road Repairs

Pima County Supervisors are considering a countywide sales tax that could speed up road repairs.  The proposed half-cent sales tax will accelerate road repairs, and the Sales Tax Advisory Committee will hold five public hearings to discuss the sales tax increase.  Officials are asking residents to attend one of the public hearings that will also discuss plans to use sales tax revenue to reduce County property taxes.  The meetings will be held on January 9th, January 10th, two meetings on January 17th, and January 23rd.
