Sales Tax Nexus

Being in the sales tax industry, I do my best to stay on top of statutory changes and issues that may impact my clients.  I subscribe to sales tax blogs, sales tax newsletters, research tools, etc.  Nearly every day there’s some type of update to report…a tax rate change, a new nexus ruling, an amnesty program, etc.  It can become overwhelming.

Wasn’t all this supposed to become easier with the Streamlined Sales Tax Agreement (SSTA)?  The SSTA and its predecessor the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP) have been discussed since I started in this industry over ten years ago.  I haven’t heard too much about it in recent years.  It was top of mind in the early to mid-2000’s.

For those states that are full members of the SSTA sales tax is easier.  However, the challenge is with many of the larger states and the home-rule states.  Here, there are power struggles where they don’t want to relinquish control to a central, governing body.

So the debate continues.

How do you really make sales tax easier?  I’m interested in your thoughts.  Share your comments below.
